“The Importance of Vehicle Speed Detection System
In our country, excessive speed is the second leading cause of road accidents resulting in fatalities and injuries on roads and highways. Therefore, authorities have always been seeking effective solutions to address this traffic issue. Undoubtedly, discreetly monitoring vehicle speeds is the best way to handle speed violations on roads and highways. Among various intelligent transportation systems, vehicle speed detection systems hold special significance in our country.
Image Processing-based Speed Detection System
Using image processing is one of the latest methods for measuring vehicle speeds. In this approach, the images of passing vehicles are recorded by one or multiple video cameras, and the speed of each vehicle is calculated through image processing. The product of the Sharif University of Technology’s Connect Engineering Group has been designed and produced by a team of professors and graduates. Some unique features of this system include:
- Ability to detect speeds up to 250 kilometers per hour
- Simultaneous detection of speed for multiple vehicles
- Resilience to environmental conditions (cloudy, rainy, snowy, etc.)
- Precise classification of vehicles into light and heavy categories with an accuracy of over 98 percent
- Capability to read various types of license plates, including public, governmental, military, and international ones, etc.
- Implementation and testing of the system in highway applications at various locations across the country
- Ability to send data to multiple servers simultaneously using FTP and REST API protocols
- Sending images of violating vehicles along with complete details to the integrated system for further transmission to traffic police
- Capability to capture color images of violating vehicles.”
