Comprehensive Solutions for Intelligent Traffic Monitoring

Traffic is not just about the movement of vehicles on roads and urban areas; it includes valuable event-based information that can aid in urban planning. Moreover, traffic is event-driven, and even seemingly minor events that quickly gain significance can lead to disruptions in the lives of many citizens.

The development of cities necessitates real-time monitoring, assessment, and integrated management of these events. However, with the widespread coverage of surveillance cameras and advancements in technologies such as computer vision, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, there is no reason for concern.

At Connect Group in Sharif University of Technology, we utilize cutting-edge knowledge to design and implement various systems in this field, aiming to achieve the following objectives:

Shahin System: Recording Residents’ Violations Using Surveillance Cameras

Today, cities are equipped with urban surveillance cameras installed to monitor various events and incidents. Monitoring experts in city control centers are responsible for supervising the feeds and camera images. The Shahin system enables the connection of surveillance cameras located throughout the city to a centralized system. In addition to recording and monitoring images, this system provides the capability for intelligent, manual, and semi-automatic registration of various violations committed by residents, such as unauthorized parking, double parking, parking in pedestrian crossings, and more, under the supervision and management of operators. Leveraging the capabilities of existing urban surveillance cameras, this system can contribute to improving traffic safety and creating a safer city

Below are some key indicators of the Shahin system

  1. Ability to connect to external servers and services
  2. Ability to detect stolen vehicles and search if access is granted to the police numbering server
  3. Ability to detect locally stolen vehicles without the need for external servers
  4. Very low communication bandwidth due to the use of the ONVIF protocol
  5. Display of violation information on the image

Traffic Monitoring and Analysis of Traffic Indicators

Traditional online traffic monitoring using images obtained from surveillance cameras is a challenging and error-prone task, requiring a significant human workforce available at all days and hours. However, this system offers an intelligent and automated solution using computer vision technology to monitor traffic with high speed and accuracy and obtain traffic indicators.

Traffic indicators are standard and common metrics in traffic engineering and transportation. This system can calculate and report these indicators in real-time and within specified time intervals with good accuracy.

Some important traffic indicators include:

  1. Traffic volume counting
  2. Vehicle classification
  3. Average speed
  4. Occupancy rate
  5. Headway distance
  6. Traffic state (level of service)

By utilizing this system, we can efficiently monitor traffic conditions, collect valuable analyses, and evaluate the performance of transportation systems

Traffic Counting

The proposed system is capable of calculating the traffic volume and the number of passing vehicles through the respective gateways based on the images obtained from cameras. Then, it sends this data to the higher-level processing system. Traffic and vehicle statistics, including date, time, and location, provide valuable information for management, planning, and policymaking

 

Vehicle Classification

The system is capable of identifying and classifying various types of passing vehicles into different categories such as light vehicles, heavy vehicles, and buses. This system provides valuable information, including traffic statistics for each category, such as traffic volume counting and other relevant data.

Average Speed

The system is capable of calculating the average speed of passing vehicles at the designated location, considering the selected time interval. The average speed can be computed for individual vehicles, movement lanes, or specific gateways, based on the user’s requirements and needs

Occupancy Rate of Gateway

The system calculates the occupancy rate of the gateways based on the images received from the cameras. The occupancy rate represents the state of the road or route in terms of traffic flow capacity that has been occupied due to various reasons.

Traffic Level of Service (LoS)

Using the images obtained from cameras and adhering to specified standards from A to F, this system will identify traffic conditions at different levels of traffic service

These six levels of service are determined based on common standards in the field of traffic and are defined based on various parameters such as traffic volume, vehicle speed, delay, and stop-and-go traffic, as shown in the table below

Automatic Incident Detection (AID)

Automatic Incident Detection is another key feature of this comprehensive solution, allowing for real-time detection of numerous critical traffic events through video image processing, with necessary alerts and notifications.

Some of the important traffic events detectable by this system include:

  1. Stopped vehicles
  2. Congestion
  3. Pedestrian crossing
  4. Traffic in the wrong direction
  5. Detection of fallen objects

Stationary Vehicles

Stopped vehicles on highways and tunnels not only pose a danger to passing vehicles but also have a negative impact on traffic conditions. This system is capable of detecting stopped vehicles and alerting the operator accordingly

Congestion

Exceeding capacity or other issues can lead to congestion, which not only causes heavy traffic but can also result in unwanted incidents such as accidents. It is essential to be aware of the occurrence of congestion, identify the contributing factors, and take necessary actions to mitigate it

 

Pedestrian Traffic

In many areas such as highways, tunnels, etc., pedestrian crossing is prohibited, and pedestrian traffic can pose traffic hazards. Necessary measures must be taken in response. The system can detect and alert the presence of pedestrians in sensitive areas

Wrong-Way Traffic

Traffic in the wrong direction at gateways increases the likelihood of accidents and may lead to the occurrence of chain-reaction collisions for extended periods. With the assistance of this system and its automatic detection of wrong-way traffic, it is possible to prevent accidents in the shortest possible time

Detection of Fallen Objects

The falling of stationary objects on roads and gateways entails significant traffic hazards and problems that need to be addressed as quickly as possible. The system will detect this event, and the operator can take necessary actions to resolve the issue upon receiving the corresponding alert

Detection of Slow Vehicles

Low vehicle speeds on highways not only create traffic problems but also increase the likelihood of accidents. It is necessary to detect and investigate these cases

Detection and Announcement of Emergency Situations

Rapidly detecting emergency situations and taking necessary actions to control and improve conditions, leading to a return to normalcy, plays a crucial role in crisis management. Equipping gateways and tunnels with this intelligent and real-time capability to detect and announce emergency situations has gained significant importance.

The SAMIAR system is capable of detecting various emergency situations based on received images and issuing necessary alerts and announcements. Some of these emergency situations include:

  1. Reduced visibility
  2. Fire incidents
  3. Flooding
  4. Natural disasters (earthquakes, hurricanes, etc.)

The identification of each of these unnatural and natural incidents (such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, etc.) is among the capabilities being developed in this system, enabling quick response and optimal management during crisis situations

 

 

Reduced visibility

Fog, dust, smoke, or any such factor that reduces drivers’ visibility requires immediate identification and notification to the operator, and drivers need to be informed before reaching the hazardous area, and emergency status should be announced
